Here's a super simple homemade carpet stain remover recipe that only has three ingredients, is frugal, and that works well on lots of different stains.

This recipe was sent in by a reader, Angela, who originally used this on vomit stains on her carpet, after her poor soon got sick after eating spaghetti. It took the stain right out!

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces hydrogen peroxide

  • Between 1/2 ounce and one ounce of dish soap (some people swear it must be original Dawn dish soap)

  • 2 tablespoons baking soda

Directions:

Add all the ingredients to a plastic spray bottle and then mix well, by shaking.

Then, saturate the stain with the mixture and let it dry.

Next, vacuum and done! So easy!!

***Please note that while many people have successfully used this recipe without needing to scrub, others, perhaps because of impatience, did scrub the stain remover into their carpet, and this worked as well.***

If you use the original Dawn dish soap, or another colored dish soap, and feel like it is leaving a colored soap residue in your carpet, you may want to rinse away the remover, once it has a chance to work on the stain. The important thing is to let it work for a while before you rinse it away.

Angela explained that she used this on her son's stains, as mentioned above. Specifically she said, "This has worked amazing on vomit! My youngest's stomach did not agree with spaghetti one night and he threw up all over our beige carpet and he did not tell me until the next morning so it had many hours to dry and stain. This stuff got the entire stain out!"

Do you have any homemade cleaner recipes to share, like Angela did? If so, I'd love to hear them. You can share your own recipes here or read others that have already been submitted, some of which are for specific stains, and others which are for more general use.

Worked on blood stain!!
by: Sandy

My husband cut his finger and 5 large drops of blood ended up on my cream colored wool carpet. The more I tried to get the blood out, the worse it spread. I was sick to my stomach at the resulting approx 3 foot x 5 foot brownish orange stain (from 5 drops of blood!!!). I spent 5 days using various store bought cleaners and homemade recipes with no success—it just kept spreading. I then found this recipe and OMG it worked. It took 3 applications over a 3 day period with vacuuming between each and the stain in gone!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Spray not necessary
by: BJ

I mix this up in a little container, not a spray bottle. I rub it with a damp cloth on the stands and leave it there until later and either brush out or vacuum out. This works great on the stains I get in my camper carpet.

Dawn dish soap-- all the way!
by: Jennifer Whitt

Over a decade ago I heard a guy comment, "I only use Dawn!" I hadn't thought of it before, so I started paying attention.

I don't care if it's an emergency stain remover when you get something on your shirt: nothing beats Dawn! I've tried all sorts of dishwashing liquids now, and nothing is as strong.

(oh, and for grease over your stove range hood, use LA Awesome!)

I read the comments and tried sprinkling the baking soda on the stains first then the spray. I waited until it was all dry and the stains from the puppy came out! This is my go to method from now on for stains in the carpet.

baking soda clogs spray
by: Anonymous

This worked well with a dish scrubber dipping into the solution in Tupperware. But trying it in 2 different spray bottles the backing soda clogged both sprayers.

Add water to mixture
by: Dmax

The mixture will be too thick to spray so you will need to add water to the spray bottle so it will spray onto the stains.

Urine

Will it remove dog urine from a rug

Missing my steam spot cleaner - till now?
by: Terri Mc

Well I just made the "recipe". Like many people, I found the mixture too thick for my spray bottle. It is about the consistency of dish soap, so used it straight. I think I'm going to save the Meyer's dish-soap bottle and make up a triple batch to put in it. Then I can squeeze out as munch as needed.

It looks like the areas I scrubbed came out. Waiting for it to dry and vacuum.

This will be my go-to until I can get a little steam spot cleaner machine again.

Do you add water to this to fill up the bottle

No baking soda!!!
by: Cgirl1966

I didn't have any baking soda so I added a little Biz liquid detergent. My dog was getting sick from some chocolate and it took the dark brown stain right out of my cream colored carpet.

Amazing recipe!

Too Thick
by: Pat

I simply could not get the baking soda to dissolve. I have tried all day, shaking the bottle every time I went thru the kitchen, but to no avail. I just tried Dawn & peroxide and it has already made a difference.

How long does it last?

This works great! My carpet is off white and this was wonderful!

Too thick
by: Trinidad

I tried two different sprayers and it was just too thick and clogged up. I ended up spreading it with a sponge. I thought a bit and if I had an empty stain remover gel container that has the bristles, it would be perfect.

Amazing

This an amazing. When my mom cut the top of her foot she also cut an artery. I use a commercial cleaner and still left a blood stain. I put this on, let it sit until it was dry and vacuumed. No stain left.
